The purpose of awards18/11/11
Wikipedia defines an award as something given to a person or a group of people to recognise excellence in a certain field; a certificate of excellence. It is interesting why people enter awards. Is it for the status, in the same way as a gold medal at the Olympics, is it for the company to celebrate internally and receive confirmation that what they are doing is working, or cynically is it simply a money-earner? For the team at Mango Marketing receiving the silver award for ‘outstanding PR agency of the year’ award last Friday was about celebrating what we do. It gave us the excuse to travel to the awards dinner in Brighton to celebrate the fact that we love our work, our clients and each other.
I have to say that for me, if we needed to win an award to show our clients that we excel at what we do, then we are doing something wrong.
We are at work for over half of our waking hours and therefore when I set up Mango Marketing in 2001 I wanted to build a team of people who were the best at what they do, work well with each other, work hard for our clients ensuring they are always overjoyed with what we achieve and of course have fun in doing this!
On Friday night we collected the top award at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) awards dinner for being the ‘outstanding PR agency of the year.’ However I am more honoured that every day the Mango team wins its own awards for achieving excellence in every aspect of what we do. |
