University: Is it really all so necessary for everyone to go?

07/10/11

Mango Marketing had Charles Rose spending the week with us on work experience. Charles shares his view on higher education.

Despite the ever present increases in university fees, students are constantly told of the importance of a good education and how important further education is in terms of our future lives.

However, the increasing costs are starting to make a number of students, parents and professionals from all fields ask, “is it really necessary to go to university, should we even think about going, is it all worth the fuss?”

The face of higher level education for over 18s changed beyond any recognition since the government announced late November/December 2010 that tuition fees from 2012 would increase to a jaw dropping £9,000 per annum.

“Education, education, education”, said Tony Blair back in the late 90s. He believed this was a crucial factor in the wellbeing of our country’s future successes and it is without a doubt that education does have paramount importance to our ambitions and our lives in general. However, we are all too aware of the fortunes of the Dragons from Dragons’ Den or of the business might of Sir Alan Sugar - many of today’s top earners who started their fortunes from very humble beginnings did not graduate from university. So what does this show us?

It goes to show that it is not necessarily the educational credentials that you hold that determine your success in the workplace. It is about your motivation and determination to work for a productive life. The rising popularity of apprenticeships continues as the government in May announced a package worth £60 million to increase apprenticeships by 250,000 over the next four years. Apprenticeships in a variety of professions and skills such as construction, agriculture, catering and even childcare are an enriching way for many students struggling up the education ladder to build an excellent future for themselves.

To conclude, all I would say is that as important and crucial as degrees may be for the foundations of a long, motivating and productive working life, it is important to know as shown by some of the top earners and future workers in our country that anyone can have the chance to prove themselves”.
